Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1992-2004 Edition:
First Edition Description:
Hardcover. Definitive history of the oldest university press in the world. Volume I covers the period from the Reformation to the end of the seventeenth century, and - for the first time - sets the early history of the Press in context, of authors, University authorities and readers, while its activities are fully related to the wider issues of the book trade in Britain and overseas. Volume II discusses the fortunes of the Press from the reforms initiated by the classical scholar Richard Bentley in the 1690s and ends in the later nineteenth century. Volume III explores changes in the printing industry, showing how the Press assumed a leading part in the typographical renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, and built on this after the Second World War to acquire an international reputation for the quality of its work. McKitterick (b.1948) was for many years Librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge, and Honorary Professor of Historical Bibliography at Cambridge.
