Octavo, 318 pages. Good condition, in a Good condition dust jacket. Beige spine, with red and black lettering. Dust jacket has light wear and age toning overall, with moderate wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Price unclipped: "$6.95". Red cloth boards show light bumping to head and tail of spine, and light wear overall. Textblock has light age toning to edges. Long inscription at front free end page from the author, Ambassador William Sebald (1901-1980), to his friend Captain Henri H. Smith-Hutton, USN: "To my friend and classmate, Captain Henri H. Smith-Hutton, U.S. Navy, as a token and memento of our service together in the U.S. Naval Academy, In Japan as language officers, and during the difficult and trying years of World War II in the COMINCH Headquarters, with warmest regards and esteem. / William Sebald / Naples, Florida / April 17, 1974."

1. Three TLS from Ambassador Sebald to Henri "Hank" Smith-Hutton, dated from 1975 - 1977.
2. Three ANS (holiday cards) from Sebald and his wife, to Smith-Hutton and his wife.
3. One TLS from Sebald's wife, Edith, to Smith-Hutton's wife in 1981 discussing Sebald's death in 1980.

Ambassador William J. Sebald (1901-1980) worked with the Office of Naval Intelligence in Japan during World War II. He later served in various capacities alongside General MacArthur where he became Ambassador, Chairman of the Allied Council, and political advisor to Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP). He would go on to serve as Ambassador to Burma (1952-1954) and Australia (1957-1961). [See the U.S. Naval Institute Oral History of Sebald, available online].Captain Henri Smith-Hutton (1901-1977) was U.S. Naval attache to the US Embassy in Tokyo when the war broke out, where he was interned for six months before being repatriated. He went on to work as fleet intelligence officer on the staff of Admiral E.J. King, who was CominCh from 1942-1944 (where he worked alongside Sebald). Seller ID:
